Food sufficient

• It means to grow enough vegetables locally for the population in sinpore without relying on imports of vegetables from other countries.
• Regardless of what type of farming we are involved in, it still requires land it is only the amount of land that makes the difference. In Singapore, we definitely cannot afford so much land for agriculture as we have a large population which makes land scarce and expensive.
• Therefore, we have to rely heavily on imports of food from other countries. But we are lucky that we have the technology and money to carry out a high tech farming activity.

Question.... Will S'pore be food sufficient with the help of hydroponics????

OUR STAND

• No. Singapore will not be food sufficient with the help of hydroponics.
• Reason 1. We do not have so much land dedicated to agriculture as most of the land is being used for other infrastructure.
• Reason 2. We have a large population with small land, The more people we have to feed, the more food we have to produce.
• Reason 3. Shortage of trained workers. Not many people have alot of experience in the business of agriculture.
• Reason 4. We always think that if we do not produce enough food for the population, we always still can have imports from other countries. We rely alot on the trade business as we do not have alot of natural resources within our lands.

Reflections...........

We felt that we had given our best in all the aspects of the blog such as the blogskin, and the information that we had found. The long hours that we have worked to complete this project shows the effort that we have put in. We also searched for pictures to make our blog more interesting and we hope that you will give good grades.

• Persisting- When looking for information and filtering out the information that were irrelevant.
• Listening with empathy and understanding- To listen to each other's comments and decide which was the best for the blog.
• Managing impulsivity- When the other partner does something that the other do not like, we voice out our disagreements nicely to prevent misunderstangs and quarrels.
• Gathering data through all senses- When looking for information. We use what we have learnt during lessons and what we read from the internet.

• The advantages of hydroponics over soil based farming

1.Saves space

• The hydroponics' vegetable are being grown on trays stacked on top of one another so hydroponics farming does not need a large plot of land.
• While soil based farmimg needs alot of land.

2. Saves water

• The water is in a tray below the tray that the vegetables are on and the roots of the plants are just left dangling in the space between and the tip of the root touches the surface of the water to suck the water up.
• Whereas, for soil based farming, the water can seep into the ground thus the plant may not absorb 100% of the water. Hydroponics farming therefore requires a smaller amount of water then soil based farming.

3. Does not cause pollution to the environment

• In hydroponics farming, no fertilisers are being used as the nutrients for the plants are in the liquid form.
• Whereas for soil based farming, the fertilisers that are used will emmit a type of green house gas called nitrous oxide which contributes to global warming.
• And no pesticides are used in hydroponnics as the plants are either in greenhouses or are being protected by netting.
• But for soil based farming, pesticides are being used to prevent insects from destroying them which also contributes to pollution of the environment.

Disadvantages

Although hydroponics farming requires a huge amount fo capital investment for the computers, and the building of greenhouses, it is worth it does not does harmul things to the environment. Furthermore, the quality of crops from hydroponics is high and has more vitamins,

  The defination of.........Hydroponics. It is system where plants are grown without soil and the water that has been enriched with mineral elements is provided to the plants.

The explanation:

• So instead of the plant searching for nutrients like it does in soil, the nutrients are all provided for the plant.
• Throughout the years scientists have discovered through extensive research that certain formulas of various elements have more control over plant nutrition, which consequently increases production.
• The gardener is able to provide the plants with the necessary nutrients and light source that are usually provided by Mother Nature.
• In short, Hydroponics is a type of farming whereby the following are controlled: light, temperature, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, pH and nutrients
